Never have heard of a compulsive booster ball ticket buyer, or a compulsive cake walker. I don't think "Dominoes Anonymous" exists. Playing family friendly bingo at American Legion hasn’t bankrupted anyone and devastated families. Gaming Centers do. Don’t suppose you watched 60 Minutes last night and the interview with Steve Wynn? Wynn, the most successful casino owner in Las Vegas he doesn’t gamble. His father died a compulsive gambler who owned and operated a bingo parlor and left the family over $300,000 in debt upon his death. Wynn stated in the interview and challenged twice by the interviewer if Wynn stood by his statement of his observations as a casino owner – he has never known of anyone that got ahead gambling. If they won a ton they lost it and then some and never came out ahead.
Laws are passed and inacted to protect the innocent and ignorant, outlawing gambling is case in point.

the U B and the City get their money from the same place - the citizens. Either in taxes or rates and fees. If I understand correctly what I read - the UB does not have the funds to make their portion of the bond payment, so they have agreed to make interest only payments until when? What happens when the principle kicks in along with the interest payments?

On City, UB agree on bond issue

well said, tidefan -
The Andalusia Spring Fling was destined for failure when then mayor Johnson placed his beer tent next to the kiddie games. The city spent thousands $ trying to make it go. The Spring Hoe Down took its place. The Hoe Down will put as many people in the Kiwanis building as any event second only to the annual CCEC meeting. Buses full of visitors arrive from several counties and cities bringing folks into town to enjoy the festivities.

On Bullard wants arena to ‘be for the county’

First Winkie – County was not debt free – it was getting overloaded with lease payments and Weed raised taxes 1% to try and balance the budget.
Justice – the County ran advertisements seeking prospective offers. Anyone had the opportunity to step forward.
For the Arena to show a profit on paper it would require events the county would have to take risks on – big time entertainment – Alabama (which doesn’t exist anymore) is well over $100,000 to book. But good money can be made with big names – just look at what Opp does with Rattle Snake rodeo and they deal with weather related risks, one rain out and they are in the red. Same with Gilley Entertainment – he has been fortunate but one rainy weekend and he looses millions $. You bloggers would crucify the commission if they took a risk with your money. There is a blue grass festival held at the Arena and a fall rodeo, ever attended?
Nothing new about companies occupying buildings for little or no rent – it’s done every day under the name of economic development. How many millions of your $ have been invested in the facilities at the airport – what are those companies paying in rent? As a good friend of mine has said on a number of occasions – when businesses do good everyone benefits – a rising tide floats all boats.
As far as Don Bullard goes – for you that think he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth – you are wrong. His dad started with nothing and worked hard building ponds and clearing land. He ventured into paving driveways using nearly worn out equipment that he patched up to keep it running. Don was barely out of high school when his dad suffered a heart attack on the job. Don, weighing not much more that a 100 lbs soaking wet, carried his daddy in his arms up a steep hill trying to get him medical help – his daddy died in his arms. Many thought that would be the end of Bullard Excavating – but Don and his Mom did whatever it took to survive and grew the business to what you see today. I challenge any of you bloggers to lace up your boots and follow Don for one day. Meet him before daylight on the job; you won’t last until the sun comes up. Don is a good steward – he takes pride in his equipment – he knows God has blessed him. He keeps his equipment painted and repaired. And God loves good stewards.
Don and his family will make the Center a success with hard work and good business practices, just like the have done with Bullard Excavating and Hot Mix Transport. I hope he packs the Center out every time he holds an event – and the entire county will benefit as those people come here and spend their money in our communities.

On Bullard may lease arena

there is at least a dozen places in Opp, Andalusia and Florala that can host a 50 -100 person event, privately owned and community owned.
And you can rent the Kiwanis Building and spend the night in it if you want to.
It takes a lot of energy to heat or cool the Kiwanis and Arena buildings, it takes a fairly large event to justify the costs
