Andy wins district tournament

Andalusia overcame a quick start by the Covington County 11- and 12-year-old Little League All-Stars to record a 6-4 win and clinch the District 5 Championship.

Covington County went on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Shane Turner started the offense with a lead-off single and came around to score.

Covington County added three more runs in the top of the second inning when Leonard Palmer, Ross Parker and Shane Turner scored.

Turner hit a home run in the second inning for Covington County.

Andalusia failed to score in the first inning, but scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to trim Covington County's lead to 4-2.

Taylor Culbreth reached on a single in the second inning and Nathan Shirey came in as a pinch runner. Shirey scored later in the inning along with Taylor Wrench. Wrench reached on a double in the inning.

In the third inning, Andalusia tacked on two more runs to knot the score at 4-4.

Jeffry Etheridge reached on a triple in the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by James Hogg.

Andalusia's second run of the inning came on solo home run by Joe Kyser.

Andalusia went on top in the bottom of the fourth inning when Nick Cooper and Ryan Godwin rounded the bases for a 6-4 lead.

Covington County's All-Stars failed to score against starting pitcher Ryan Godwin after the second inning.

Godwin pitched a complete game for the win. He allowed four runs while striking out two.

The members of the Andalusia All-Stars are David Dove, Taylor Wrench, Joe Kyser, Tom Wright, Nathan Shirey, Brannon Bryan, James Hogg, Jeffry Etheridge, Nick Cooper, Ryan Godwin, Brent Shiver and Taylor Culbreth. The team is coached by Manager Phillip Shiver, Assistant Coach Michael Shirey and Assistant Coach Wayne Godwin.

The Andalusia All-Stars will serve as the host team for the Alabama State Tournament being held at the Sports Complex in Andalusia.

Andalusia's All-Stars will serve as the District 5 representative at the tournament in the six-team tournament.

The tournament begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 with a second game at 8 p.m.

The Andalusia All-Stars will play in their first game of the tournament at 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 after a first-round bye.

The District 4 representative will also have a first-round bye. The District 4 representative's first game will be at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.
