Andy Dixie Majors avenge tourney loss

Revenge came via an 8-4 win for the Andalusia Dixie Major baseball team.

The Andalusia squad topped Chickasaw 8-4 on Thursday to avenge its only loss of the State Tournament being played in Thomasville. Andalusia's win also eliminated Chickasaw from the tournament.

Chickasaw scored three runs in the top of the first inning of starting pitcher Brock Bracewell to go on top 3-0.

Craig Phillips belted a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to cut Chickasaw's lead to 3-1

The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the third inning when Andalusia scored one run to trim Chickasaw's advantage to 3-2. Will Starr reached base on an error and came around to score in the inning.

The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the fifth when Andalusia knotted the score at 3-3. Gene Pickard scored after reaching base on an error to tie the game up at 3-3.

Chickasaw managed to score one run in the top of the sixth for a 4-3 lead.

In the sixth inning, Andalusia's offense got on track exploding for five runs to take an 8-4 lead.

Jay Bryant started the inning with a double, but he was not at second base very long. Ryan Mitchell was the next Andalusia batter and he set the tone for the inning when he jumped on the first pitche and blasted two-run home run to give Andalusia a 5-4 lead.

The rest of the Andalusia players fed off Mitchell's blast. Shane Dawsey followed Mitchell with a single and then Brock Bracewell reached on a base hit. Gary Baumgartner followed Bracewell in the order and reached on a fielder's choice when Baumgartner was retired at second on a force out. Gene Pickard then reached on an error.

Dawsey, Baumgartner and Pickard all scored in the inning. Will Starr had a sacrifice fly in the inning and Daniel Wall also had a single in the inning.

When the dust settled, Andalusia held an 8-4 advantage.

Chickasaw failed to score in the top of the seventh as Brock Bracewell sat the batters down in order striking out two in the inning.

Bracewell pitched a complete game allowing four runs (two earned) in seven innings on five hits, one walk and one hit batter. He struck out eight.

On offense, Daniel Wall and Ryan Mitchell were both 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Craig Phillips was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Will Starr was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Gene Pickard was 0-for-3 with one RBI.

The Andalusia Dixie Major returned to the diamond in Thomasville at 5:30 p.m. on Friday for an elimination game against Hueytown. The winner advanced to the State Championship game against Southeast of Montgomery scheduled for today.
