Trojans rally past Bulldogs

Charles Henderson Middle School running back Scotty Rumph scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left

to play in regulation for a 28-22 lead in last night's middle-school football game between Andalusia and Troy. The Trojans added a two-point conversion on a pass play to take a 30-22 lead and held on for the win.

The game started with the AMS Bulldogs going on top when Ladarrius McNeil scored on a 23-yard touchdown run. Matt Mellown added a two-point conversion on a bootleg to the left side and went into the end zone untouched for an early 8-0 lead.

Charles Henderson Middle School knotted the score with 7:13 remaining in the first half when Rumph scored on a two-yard touchdown run. He added a two-point conversion on a run to tie the score at 8-8.

The Bulldogs went right back on top when Matt Mellown hit Dustin Kindred in stride for a 50-yard pass play that resulted in a touchdown. The two-point attempt failed, but the AMS Bulldogs held a 14-8 lead.

AMS added to the lead in the final seconds of the first half when Matt Mellown hit Marquis Byrd on a pass play that went 48 yards for a touchdown. Dustin Kindred tapped his toes down just inside the back boundary of the end zone on another pass play for the two-point conversion and AMS held a 22-8 lead with 6.9 seconds left in the first half.

In the second half, the Trojans cut into Andalusia's lead when Rumph scored on a touchdown run with 3:28 left to go in the third quarter. The two-point attempt failed and Andalusia's lead was down to 22-14.

The CHMS Trojans knotted the score at 22-22 with 43 seconds left in regulation when Rumph scored on a two-yard run. The two-point attempt was good to tie the score.

A fumble on the Bulldogs' ensuing possession gave the ball back to the Trojans with less than a minute to play in regulation.

The Trojans capitalized when Rumph scored on an 11-yard yard run on a third-and-four play from the 11-yard line. The two-point attempt was good and the Trojans held a 30-22 lead with 8.3 seconds left in the game.

Andalusia failed to score with the Trojans earning a comeback win by a final score of 30-22.

The AMS Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 17 when they host Dauphin Junior High School. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
