FHS Wildcats fall to Cottonwood

A road trip to the outskirts of Dothan resulted in a loss for the Florala Wildcats in high school football action last night.

The Wildcats fell behind 19-0 in the first half, but refused to give up scoring in the second quarter to make the score 19-6.

Cottonwood, however, went on to score two more times for a 27-6 victory.

Cottonwood went on top early on a touchdown pass from Allen Williams to Quentin Stringer. The play covered 18 yards.

The next scoring play came on the ground for Cottonwood. Rhyshaun Tillman went 24 yards for a touchdown to add to the lead.

Byron Williams added the third touchdown on a turnover. He intercepted a pass and ran it back 56 yards for a touchdown to give Cottonwood a 19-0 lead.

Florala Wildcat running back Victor Hobdy scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter to trim Cottonwood's lead to 19-6.

Cottonwood, however, mustered one last scoring drive before the halftime intermission for a 27-6 lead.

Allen Williams hit Byron Williams on a pass play that resulted in a touchdown and a 27-6 lead with two seconds left in the first half.

In the second half, Byron Williams tacked on an insurance touchdown when he raced 62 yards for a touchdown.

The win was Cottonwood's first of the season. It improves Cottonwood's record to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in Class 1A, Region 2 competition.

The loss drops Florala to 0-3 in 2002 and 0-2 in Class 1A, Region 2.

Florala returns to the gridiron next Friday night when the Kinston Bulldogs come to town for the Wildcats' homecoming. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
