A 5-year-old child drowned at Point A Recreation Park near Red Level Friday afternoon, according to Officer John E. Bozeman of the Alabama Marine Patrol.

Bozeman said the Covington County Sheriff's Department received a call at approximately 12:42 p.m regarding a child that was missing.

The child was Ernest Ray Coons and he and his family, according to Bozeman, were living at the campground area of Point A Lake. The family was originally from Pennsylvania, but Bozeman said it was not known how long the family had lived at Point A Lake.

Rescue agencies arrived on the scene at 12:57 p.m. after the call was made, and the child may have been missing for perhaps 30 minutes before his mother realized that he was in fact missing.

When the mother called the sheriff's department, several agencies in Covington County responded, including the state marine patrol officers.

At approximately 1:15 p.m., the child was located at the end of a pier in the water, and was transported by rescue to the emergency room unit of Andalusia Regional Hospital.

Efforts to revive the child were continued for 30 to 45 minutes before Coons was pronounced dead at 1:58 p.m.

Parents of the child were listed as Julianne E. Coons and Stanley Coons.

Coons was to be taken to the Foreman Funeral Home,

but arrangements had not been finalized as of press time.
