Red Level Tigers sweep Straughn Tigers

Red Level was supposed to host the Straughn Tigers on Friday, but a change in the schedule meant the Red Level Tigers would travel to Straughn for a county rivalry game.

Red Level proved to be the better bunch of Tigers in basketball action sweeping the Straughn Tigers with wins in the B-team, varsity girls' and varsity boys' games on Friday.

In the varsity boys' game, the Red Level Tigers pounced on Straughn early building a 10-3 lead in the first quarter.

Straughn managed to find some offense in the second quarter, but Red Level remained on top at the half after outscoring Straughn 21-8.

The second half began with Red Level out in front 31-11.

The Red Level Tigers added to the lead in the third quarter with a 16-11 run for a 47-22 advantage going into the final period.

Straughn scored 17 points in the fourth period, but Red Level matched them point for point with 17 points as well for a 64-39 victory.

Frank Tolbert was the leading scorer for Red Level with 19 points. Dexter Brundidge added 15 points and Jamie Perry hit for 14 in the win. Tanner Carroll scored seven points against Straughn. Antonio "A.J." Harris, Larry Hudson and Will McInvale each scored two points each for the Red Level Tigers.

None of the Straughn players reached double figures in scoring with Jeremy Hunt coming closest with nine points. Justin Bracewell added eight in the loss and Brandon Hendrix hit for seven. Garrett Windham had five points. Al Freeney and Michael White each scored four points. Michael Hattaway had two points.

RED LEVEL WINS

VARSITY GIRLS' GAME

The Lady Tigers from Red Level stormed the court at Straughn School with a 16-6 run in the opening quarter en route to a 35-26 win.

Red Level went on top early only to watch the Straughn Lady Tigers battle back to trim the lead to nine at the half by a score of 23-14.

In the third quarter, Straughn's Lady Tigers trimmed Red level's lead some more and were behind 27-20 going into the final quarter.

In the final period, Red Level put together a run to stretch the lead back to nine points and a 35-26 win.

Gabrielle DeRouen paced Red Level on offense with 16 points. Her twin sister Danielle DeRouen hit for 11 points in the win. Kim Anderson and Daphne Crittenden added four points each for Red Level.

McKena Parker was the leading scorer for Straughn with 15 points. Ashley Turner and Abby Bracewell each scored four points for Straughn. Jennifer Nall had two points and Ashley Daniels scored one point in the loss.

RED LEVEL B-TEAM

WINS IN OVERTIME

The players on the Red Level Tigers B-team earned a 47-43 victory against their Straughn counterparts in a hard-fought game that needed an extra period to decide a winner.

The game went into overtime with the score tied 41-41. Red Level managed to outscore the Straughn B-team Tigers in the extra period for a 47-43 win.

Tim Ryce and Malcolm Lawson had 10 points each for Red Level in the win. Wayne Goldsmith and Chris Hendrix added six points each. Justin Griggs and Joseph Harper scored five points each for Red Level. Dominic Williams had three points and Troy Calloway had two points.

Scotty Rabren had 12 points to pace Straughn. Jody Sexton and Jason Cotton had 10 points each in the loss. Zack Hammett scored nine points for Straughn. Jeff Bass hit for two points.

All three Straughn teams will be back in action today when the Abbeville Yellow Jackets visit the gymnasium for an area game. The first game is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Red Level School's basketball squads return to the court on Tuesday when the Tigers travel to Georgiana to battle the Panthers.
