Opp Bobcats top Straughn, 9-0

The Opp Bobcats pounced on the visiting Straughn Tigers early and dug in their claws to hold on for a 9-0 win in high school baseball action Tuesday night at Merchant's Field in Opp.

The Bobcats got out of the top of the first inning when a line drive off the bat of Bart Beam resulted in a double play to end the Straughn threat.

In the bottom of the inning, the Bobcats struck for five runs. Josh Anderson started off the inning by reaching base on an error by the Straughn second baseman. He stole second to get into scoring position as Daniel Coleman struck out for the first Opp out.

Drew Mims followed Coleman in the batting order and delivered with a hard hit ball that resulted in an error which allowed him to race to second base as Anderson scored.

Heath Williamson followed Mims with a RBI-double and scored later in the inning on an error by the Straughn shortstop. Lane Fuller reached base on the error and scored later in the inning on another Straughn error after Michael Hattaway reached base on a single.

Hattaway moved to third on the error that allowed Fuller to score and came home with the fifth run on the inning when Langdon Stanley ripped an RBI-single.

Straughn got out of the inning trailing 5-0 and failed to score in the top of the second inning.

Opp did not score in the bottom of the second, but added a run to the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Fuller scored after reaching base on a lead-off single.

He moved to second when Hattaway drew a walk. Fuller raced to third on a sacrifice fly by Langdon Stanley when the Straughn third baseman dropped the ball on a tag attempt. He scored later in the inning on an error.

Straughn prevented more runs from scoring when Opp tried to run a squeeze play and ran into a double play.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Opp's Josh Anderson drew a walk and came around to score. Mims had a sacrifice fly to plate him.

The Bobcats stretched the 7-0 lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Fuller and Hattaway scored. Hattaway and Langdon Stanley had RBIs in the inning.

Opp went on to win 9-0 to improve to 4-3 on the season. The loss drops Straughn to 5-1.

Langdon Stanley was the winning pitcher for the Bobcats allowing no runs on five hits in the game. He struck out five.

Straughn won the JV game played prior to the varsity game by a final score of 7-4.

Jared Armstrong was the winning pitcher allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings of work. He struck out six. Heath Holmes pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out five.

Straughn's offense came from a host of players. Daniel Beckworth was 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs. Armstrong helped himself with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs.

Josh Leonard was 2-for-4 in the game against Opp with one run scored. Holmes, Hunter Canant and Thomas Sports also scored on run in the win. Jeff Bass had one RBI in the win.

Andrew Weaver scored one run for Opp. Andrew "Big Show" Showalter was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the loss.

Ryan Cooke was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases in the game.
