Dolphins #039;dink#039; Bulldogs

Thirteen runs on 13 hits gave the Gulf Shores Dolphins an important area win against the Andalusia Bulldogs in high school baseball action Wednesday.

The Dolphins had 13 hits and most of them were "dinks" over the infield.

The majority of the hits were bloop singles, but it got the job done for the Dolphins as they earned a 13-0 win in seven innings.

The loss drops Andalusia to 12-10 overall and 2-2 in area play. The Dolphins improve to 5-0 in area play.

Strong defense and solid pitching by both teams kept the game scoreless the first four innings.

Neal Patterson was robbed of extra bases in the bottom of the first inning when Dolphins left fielder Todd Loyd made a diving catch.

Michael Dutton returned the favor for his fellow outfielder when he robbed Gulf Shores' Glen Lewellen with a diving catch in the top of the third inning.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Dolphins managed to get two runs.

Lewellen started the rally with a two-out single. Garrett Hoffman kept the rally going when he reached on an error by the Andalusia shortstop.

Loyd and Justin Smith followed with bloop singles to plate Lewellen and Hoffman.

The Dolphins added to their lead in the top of the sixth with three more runs for a 5-0 cushion.

Andalusia failed to score in the bottom of the sixth inning after getting runners on second and third with one out.

The Bulldogs hit the ball hard several times, but right at defenders.

The Dolphins continued to find open spaces with "dinks" to plate eight more runs for a total of 13.

Daniel Wall started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs and went six innings. He allowed seven runs on nine hits and four walks. He struck out eight.

Neal Patterson came in to pitch with two runners on in the top of the seventh inning. He gave up six runs on four hits and two walks.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to the diamond on Friday when the UMS-Wright Bulldogs visit town for a 5 p.m. area game.
