Kinston tops Lady Wildcats, 7-0

One bad inning proved to be costly for the Florala Lady Wildcats in high school softball action against the visiting Kinston Lady Bulldogs yesterday.

The score was knotted at 0-0 through two innings of play with Kinston going on top 1-0 in the top of the third.

Florala failed to score in the bottom of the third inning and Kinston came out swinging in the top of the fourth.

The Lady Bulldogs added six runs to their lead thanks to hits and a few Lady Wildcat errors.

Crystal Lawliss was the leading hitter for the Lady Wildcats going 2-for-3 in the game with two singles.

Cara Cawthon was 1-for-2 in the game with a single to lead-off the bottom of the second inning. She moved to second when Mindy Crownover drew a walk. Cawthon raced to third base when Melanie Corbin grounded out for the first out of the inning.

The Lady Wildcats had runners on second and third with one out, but failed to score in the inning with the Kinston pitcher getting a strikeout and a groundout to end the Florala threat.

Amy Hickman had a single in the bottom of the third inning for Florala, but was stranded at first base.

Crownover reached base in the fourth on a walk, but was called out when she ran out of the baseline to avoid being tagged when Melanie Corbin reached on a fielder's choice. Alison Cobb also reached base in the inning when she was hit by a pitch.

The game was called after five innings of play due to darkness with Kinston being awarded a 7-0 win.

Kinston won the junior varsity contest by a final score of 10-0 in five innings.

The varsity Lady Wildcats play again on Thursday when they host the Samson Lady Tigers at 3:30 p.m.

The varsity and junior varsity squads from Florala both play on Friday when they host Ariton at 4:30 p.m.
