Bulldogs finish second

It came down to the final matches of the day at the sectional tournament and the Brewbaker Technology Magnet team from Montgomery topped the defending Class 4A State Runner-Up Andalusia Bulldogs in tennis.

The Rams finished as the sectional champs with Andalusia coming home as the sectional runner-up. Both teams qualified for the state tournament being played in Montgomery next week. The Opp Bobcats finished third at sectionals and did not qualify for the state tournament.

The Bulldogs won the No. 2 doubles match as Ed Frye and Stephen Gunter teamed up for a 6-1, 6-2 win in the first match. The Bulldog combo then won the No. 2 doubles title match by a score of 6-2, 6-1.

Andalusia did not do as well in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches.

Will Fagerstrom and James Barlow played in the No. 1 doubles competition. They won the first match 6-1, 6-2. They lost in the title match by a final score of 1-6, 3-6.

Jason Dyer and Pavan Bang also lost in doubles play. They fell by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 5-7.

In singles action, Andalusia won three sectional titles.

James Barlow won the No. 2 singles title at the sectional tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 win after a first-round bye.

Will Fagerstrom won the No. 3 singles title at the sectional tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win in his first match. He followed with a 7-6, 6-0 win for the sectional title.

In the No. 4 singles competition, Stephen Gunter won the sectional title with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the title match. He advanced to the title match with a 6-1, 6-0 win in first-round play.

Ed Frye lost in No. 1 singles play by a score of 0-6, 1-6.

Jason Dyer went three sets before falling in the No. 5 singles match for the sectional title. He lost by a final score of 6-2, 4-6, 4-6.

Pavan Bang played No. 6 singles for Andalusia and won his first-round match by a score of 6-2, 6-4. In the sectional title match for No. 6 singles, Bang came up short by a final score of 6-2, 1-6, 1-6.

The Bulldogs will begin play at the state tournament on Thursday in Montgomery.
