Excessive speed is being blamed for a one-vehicle wreck in River Falls

Wednesday morning which caused injuries to an 83-year-old Mobile woman.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. on U.S. 84 at the 129-mile marker.

River Falls Police Chief Jeff Holland said Pearl Scott of Mobile was heading east on U.S. 84 and was traveling to Andalusia for a friend's 100th birthday party.

Scott approached a curve and apparently lost control of the Pontiac Bonneville she was driving and it left the road.

After her car left the road, the car, according to Holland, skidded between 400 and 500 feet.

The car entered a grassy area near some railroad tracks after knocking out a sign pole and an electrical service line. The front portion of the car received extensive damage.

The Andalusia Rescue Squad responded to the scene and transported Scott to Andalusia Regional Hospital because she was complaining of back pain.

Also responding to the scene were officials from Covington Electric Cooperative.

Holland said he believes excessive speed will definitely be determined to be the cause of the wreck, and he also noted that wrecks at the location on U.S. 84 are common.

"We have a lot of accidents in that particular area," said Holland. "Usually the wrecks occur after it has been raining."

Wednesday's wreck was the second in two days in or near River Falls. On Tuesday a one-vehicle wreck on Sunnyside Drive on County Road 170 claimed the life of 43-year-old Red Level resident Mike Nolen .

Holland said the fatal wreck is still under investigation and a probable cause has yet to be determined.
