Andalusia Bulldogs cage Bobcats

Andalusia overcame a six-point deficit in the final quarter of play to record a 62-61 win against the Opp Bobcats in Opp Friday night.

Opp, which was playing with two starters on the bench for disciplinary reasons, had a 47-41 lead at the start of the fourth quarter. Andalusia knotted the score at 58-58 with 1:11 left to play with two successful free throw attempts and then called a timeout.

Opp went up by one point 20 seconds later when Sanches Stephens made one of two free-throw attempts.

D'andra Wright gave the lead back to Andalusia when he banked in a long two-point basket with 35 seconds left in the game.

Opp went back on top when Tyrell Hunter canned a basket for a 61-60 lead.

Andalusia had 16.9 seconds left and called a timeout. After the team huddled around Head Coach Richard Robertson the Bulldogs went to Lance Evans on offense. Evans went coast-to-coast and drove down the baseline for a lay-up and a 62-61 lead.

Opp called a timeout with 6.1 seconds left. The Bobcats moved the ball down the court, but missed at the horn with Andalusia recording a 62-61 win.

Andalusia improves to 3-8 on the season. The loss drops Opp to 6-6.

Brandon Wilson was the leading scorer for Andalusia with 22 points. Andrae Wright scored 18 points. Evans ended the game with 12 points. Michael Cauley had 4 points. Josh Johnson, Andrew McTyere and D'andra Wright had 2 points each.

Emanuel Lane had 20 points for Opp. Stephens added 14 points. Daniel Coleman had 11 points. Holt Parker had 7 points. Hunter hit for 5 points. Rhett Barnes and Marcus Hines had 2 points each.

Andalusia won the girls' game by a final score of 78-53 to improve to 8-4 on the season. The loss drops the Lady Bobcats to 8-3.

The game was close going into the final period. The score was tied up at 44-44 late in the third. Andalusia went on a 6-0 run to end the third for a 50-44 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored Opp 28-9 in the final period for a 78-53 win.

Ashley Johnson had 31 points to pace the Andalusia offense. Tanesha Wright scored 14 points. Apri Kilgore hit for 12. Ann Huff had 8 points in the win. Kathy Crittenden, Jermecia McNeil, April Daniels and Tanisha Wytch also scored for Andalusia.

Trinity Osborn scored 25 points to pace Opp. Ashley Mock added 12 points. Kim Crittenden had 6 points. Jessica Wood and Sasha Musgrove scored 5 points each.

In the B-team game, Andalusia recorded a 50-21 win.

William Alverson had 22 points to pace the Bulldogs. Jacob Cauley and Cherno Bah added 7 points each. Alex Taylor, Kevin Huff, Tyler Centner and Jeremy Ferrell also scored for the Bulldogs.

Demaril Smith scored 10 points for Opp. Jacob Nawlin, Bryan Tillis, Zach Banks and Torshawn Brooks also scored.

The Andalusia squads return to action today when the teams travel to Troy to play Charles Henderson High School beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The Opp varsity basketball teams play again on Friday, Jan. 9 at Bullock County High School beginning at 5:30 p.m.
