After spending 10 years working with flowers, Michelle Smith decided it was time she went into business for herself.

And so was born Flowers by Michelle, a quaint little floral shop located on 998 South Forest Ave.

Originally from Montgomery, Smith and her family moved to the area when she was a teenager. She has worked in Greenville, at Forget-Me-Not Florist, and also in Luverne, for Glenda Connors at Angelia's Flowers and Gifts. It was at these two stops where she learned the tricks of the trade.

Mainly, to make sure the customer is happy with the presentation.

"When I'm doing a floral arrangement, I ask myself if I would like it," she said. "If the answer is yes, then I'm pretty sure the customer will be pleased."

Flowers by Michelle held its grand opening on Monday and Smith describes her fist few days as 'busy,' especially with Valentine's Day coming this month. She said she planned her opening for the prime flower season since summers are sometimes slow.

"Valentine's Day is probably the most popular holiday for flowers," she said. "Next would be Mother's Day followed by Christmas. Wreaths and poinsettias do well during the holiday season."

The most popular flower?

What else?

The red rose.

Smith offers a wide variety of fresh floral arrangements, plants and balloons for any occasion. Delivery inside of Luverne is free, but there is a charge for out-of-town deliveries.

She is looking forward to serving this area for many years.

"This store is something I've always thought about and I'm happy to be open," she said. "My children attend school in Luverne so I'm really glad to be close to them and my parents."

Smith is married to Sandy Smith and they have two children, Woody and Savanna.
