The Honorable Judge Charles Price will be speaking at Greenville High School on Friday, February 25, at 1 p.m. in the GHS Auditorium.

The Hunter’s Station native has accomplished several firsts in his legal career. He became the first nonwhite District Attorney in Alabama’s history and the only one in the country at the time of his appointment. Judge Price is also the first nonwhite to serve as Montgomery County Circuit Judge, a position he has held since 1983.

He received the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation’s &uot;John F. Kennedy’s Profiles in Courage Award&uot; in 1997 and the National Education Association’s 1998 &uot;Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Award&uot;. Price has proved himself a judge unafraid to court controversy, due to the stand he took in his ruling against (then) fellow Circuit Court Judge Roy Moore’s use of the Ten Commandments display in his courtroom.

A former U. S. Army paratrooper, the judge is also a retired lieutenant colonel with the Army Reserve.

Judge Price is a graduate of Virginia Union University with a law degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He began his legal degree in the nation’s capital working for the U.S. Department of Justice.

After returning to Alabama, Judge Price served as Assistant Attorney General for the state until he was appointed Acting District Attorney for Escambia County. He later served as Deputy District Attorney for Montgomery County, a position he held until entering private practice in 1978. In 1981, Montgomery Mayor Emory Folmar appointed him to the position of Assistant Municipal Judge, a position he held until his appointment to the circuit judgeship.

Off the bench, Judge Price is involved in a number of professional and civic activities, including serving on the board of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. He has taught law at the University of Alabama and Jones School of Law. Judge Price is a member of St. John’s A.M.E. Church in Montgomery, where he serves on the Steward Board and teaches Sunday School.
