For the sophomore at Greenville High School, the first part of the week was held taking the Writing Assessment. On Thursday afternoon, the Lady Tigers softball team will also take a test.

The first game of the season for the Lady Tigers will be Thursday afternoon when they take the diamond against the Andalusia High School Lady Bulldogs.

"We're not where we need to be, but the kids are doing everything I ask and they are learning," said Donna Sunnycalb, coach of the Greenville High Lady Tigers.

"This right now is just a learning process. The more game situations we can get the girls into, the better they are going to be. We are still playing with a couple of things."

"We have a few of the players that have missed some practices that won't start and they normally would be key players and starters but we have to stick to what we say and reward the ones that come to practice everyday and the ones that don't have to sit the bench and wait their turn."

Monday night, the Lady Tigers were being put through their paces and in game situations by Sunnycalb.

"The starting nine were put into live game situations with the coach hitting either pop-ups or grounders or even the occasional bunt."

"The defense was responsible for keeping up with the outs, where the base runners were and where the play was going to be made.

"We are looking at players who some this is their first year to play but they are coachable players," said Sunnycalb.

"We just need more time and more practice. It's just taking time. But we need more time and more repetition than anything else right now."

Despite the inexperience of Greenville's team, Sunnycalb is still excited about the season's kickoff Thursday afternoon.

"When we do things like this, put each other in situations and stuff like that," said Sunnycalb. "It gets me excited."

"It gets me excited to see the kids comprehending the things that we've been working on.

It's exciting to see them actually learning and comprehending things like base running and trusting the coaches.

Just trusting the coaches and what they are doing and having faith in us. To do simple things, watch the coaches and not watching the ball and that's what it's going to take for this team to be successful, establishing trust."

Thursday afternoon, the Lady Tigers will have the opportunity to put what they've been practicing to the test. The first pitch against the 4A Lady Bulldogs is set for 4:30 and will be played at the Lady Tiger Softball Complex across from Greenville High School.

From there, the Lady Tigers will be in action on March 3 when they play host to the St. James Lady Trojans.

First pitch for that game is set for 4:30 and will also be played at the Lady Tigers Softball Field.
