Citizens of Greenville had the opportunity to receive free trees on Tuesday, thanks to National Arbor Day. From 8 a.m. until around 1:30 p.m. members of the Butler County Chapter of the Alabama Treasure Forest Association and the Greenville Tree Commission were posted in Confederate Park giving away different types of trees.

The most prominent type of tree that the group handed out was Redbud trees. They are said to have clusters of rosy pink flowers in the spring and dark green summer leaves turning yellow in the fall.

According to Jennifer Stringer, the City of Greenville’s Horticulturalist, the group ordered 23,000 trees and at the end of the day they had given them all away.

&uot;I think we would have had an even better response had we been able to advertise it more,&uot; Stringer said.

The free trees are a part of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Trees for America Campaign.
