After cake-walking the district tournament the Senior Boys All-Star team from Greenville Parks and Recreation Department traveled to Fort Payne to face stiffer competition in the state tournament.

Someone forgot to tell the boys that the competition was tougher at the state tournament.

Greenville defeated their first round opponent, Northeastern-Huntsville 111-38 and then knocked off Fort Payne 80-34 to win the state championship. Huntsville was sent to the consolation game and faced the squad from Hewitt-Trussville.

At the end of that game, Trussville, who had to compete in a play-in game just to get into the tournament finished third.

In the first game, the squad from Greenville jumped out to an early 36-6 lead and then pushed it to a 56-16-halftime lead.

Greenville remained in control throughout the second half,

tacking on 55 second half points and giving up 22.

Kentrelle Smith proved to be the team's leading scorer with 23 points, 19 of those coming in the first half. DeMarcus Griffin tacked on 18 points with 14 of those coming early in the second half. Sylvester Seawright tacked on 17 points and Roderick Smith added 11.

Chris Shephard and Victor Mangum proved to be the leading scorers for Huntsville's squad in the loss. The duo combined for 29 of the team's 38 points.

In the state championship game, Greenville jumped out to an early 14-11 lead over the squad from Fort Payne, but that lead quickly expanded beyond three points and into a 35-30 halftime lead.

But in the second half, Greenville held their opponents to 14 points and posted 26 in the second half.

DeMario Roper posted 21 points for Greenville. Smith finished the day with 14 points. Reco Johnson tacked on 13 points and Roderick Smith finished with 12 points. DeMarcus Griffin finished with eight points.

The members of the Senior Boys basketball team will be recognized for their success during an upcoming Greenville City Council meeting.
