A Montgomery man made off with several hundred dollars from a gas station in Highland Home on Monday morning, but was later caught by the Crenshaw County Sheriff's Office.

Alonza McCall, a resident of Carriage Hill Apartments in Montgomery, was arrested on Monday night and charged with the armed robbery of the BP station located near Highland Home High School on County Road 59, according to CCSO Investigator Ronnie White.

McCall, 20, is currently being held in the Crenshaw County Jail.

Carol Emerick was the clerk on duty at the gas station when the robbery occurred, around 8:10 a.m. on Monday, she said. She said a man entered the store at that time and approached the counter with a tube of chapstick.

"When I went to give him his change he said 'I'll take all of it,' said Emerick. "I saw the gun and said 'here, you take it.' I sure wasn't going to fight him."

Emerick said she was trying to read words on the robber's shirt. She said he then told her to get down on the floor.

"I wasn't scared until he said that," she said. "I thought he was going to blow my brains out then."

She said the robber left the store, climbed into a dark, blue Chevrolet Blazer and headed north on Highway 331. A longtime resident of Highland Home, Emerick said she knew the robber was not from the area.

"I know just about everyone around here," she said.
