Today, local animal lovers have yet another opportunity to help four-footed friends in need, while getting their own pooches clean in the process.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Butler County Humane Society (BCHS) is sponsoring the &uot;Dog Days of Summer&uot; Dog Wash and Dip at the Pet Laundry, located at 810 Conecuh St. in Greenville.

The humane society wants to keep raising awareness of local pet over-population, as they continue to raise needed funds for the local shelter.

Members are also working hard at finding homes for some of those unwanted shelter animals.

&uot;Last weekend [at the Greenville Wal-Mart], we were able to adopt out eight shelter puppies, which was great,&uot; Brenda Whitney of the BCHS said.

&uot;We are planning on holding some type of event every weekend this summer, especially as long as our pet population at the shelter stays high. We thought the dog wash and dip would be a great idea,&uot; Whitney added.

The charge for a wash is $5 for a small dog, $10 for a medium-sized one and $15 for a large dog.

For an additional charge, dogs can also be dipped for fleas. All proceeds go to the BCHS.

&uot;Even if you don’t own a canine, we would encourage you to stop by today and buy a package of ‘human’ cookies at our bake sale – and donations of any size are always welcome,&uot; Whitney said.
