After a 22-year hiatus the intracounty football rivalry between Georgiana and Greenville will be renewed the first week of the high school season in 2006, confirmed Greenville interim coach Mike Williams.

&#8220We both know it is a good money gate for both schools, so it keeps the money in the county,” Williams said. &#8220It's just a logical thing to do.”

Greenville and Georgiana have played each other in spring games before, but have not met during the regular season since 1984. The renewal of the rivalry will be for the next two years. The 2006 contest will be played at Tiger Stadium, and the 2007 game will be played at Harmon Field in Georgiana.

&#8220I'm really excited about playing Greenville,” Georgiana coach Greg Ennis said. &#8220This is something we've talked about since we both came back to Butler County.”

Georgiana is one of three new non-region games that will be on the Tigers' playing slate for the next two years. Greenville will travel to Hillcrest-Evergreen on Week 5 and host Monroe County on Week 10.

Williams said that move toward having non-region games with teams that a geographically closer.

&#8220That was the objective was to cut down on the travel time and cost,” Williams said. &#8220Both schools also have a good following. Wilcox Central did not have a good following, and Demopolis was just so far away. This is a better situation for our fans, band parents and cheerleader parents who travel with us.”

Georgiana also has added Hillcrest-Evergreen to its non-region schedule, but the big void in the Panthers' schedule for the next two years will be McKenzie.

&#8220I'm disappointed that we're not going to play them, and I think our kids are disappointed,” Ennis said. &#8220I'm sure they have a good reason for not wanting to schedule a traditional rivalry like this.”

The Panthers will play Hillcrest in Week 10 and A.L. Johnson in Week 5.

Since Georgiana and Greenville have played in a spring game, that option is now left open. Ennis said he wouldn't mind playing McKenzie in a spring game.

&#8220We have not really discussed what we are going to do as far as a spring game is concerned,” he said. &#8220I would be open to play McKenzie in a spring game just so we could have that rivalry back.”

McKenzie coach Timothy Moorer did not return a phone message by presstime Friday night.

Georgiana has its schedule drawn up, and Greenville is expected to have its region schedule completed by Wednesday.
