A Class 1A State Championship will have to wait for the Brantley Bulldogs.

At least for another year.

Brantley fell to Addison 21-12 in last Friday’s 1A title game in Birmingham.

The Bulldogs opened with 12-0 lead but couldn’t hold back Addison, which won its first state title since 1976.

“We never got the momentum back in the second half,” Brantley coach Lowery said. “Their touchdown before the end of the first half was a big momentum shift.”

Ironically, Addison head coach Rand White played on that ‘76 team – one that beat Brantley to win it all.

Addison scored just before halftime to pull momentum away from Brantley.

“The touchdown before half was a huge change of momentum for us,” White said. “That (momentum) carried over in the second half.”

“We left everything on the field and gave our all,” Brantley tailback Chris Booker said. “We put our hearts into this season.”

But the Bulldogs remain loaded with talent for a run at the title next season. Booker and fellow running mate James Pittman return, as does Class 1A finalist for Lineman of the Year Jeffery Daniels.

“Trust us, we’ll be back here next year at 3 o’clock,” Pittman said. “We want Addison.”

Addison, though, moves to Class 2A next year.
