A man led police on a high-speed car chase through the heart of downtown Greenville on Friday afternoon, striking two other automobiles before crashing his own vehicle on U.S. 10 near the I-65 junction.

The driver, unidentified by Greenville police at press time, was knocked unconscious during the accident, according to Lt. Gary Martin. Martin said the driver swerved to avoid a stopped gold SUV and lost control of the vehicle. He said the car spun and went airborne, its rear striking a number of trees along the side of the road before coming to rest in the middle of U.S. 10.

The accident left the automobile totaled. Police had to remove the car's bumper from the trees in order to read the Mississippi license plate.

Emergency medical personnel placed the unconscious driver on a backboard, a brace around his neck. Martin said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and EMTs removed him from the backseat, instead of the front.

Butler County Sheriff Diane Harris said the chase initiated at A&M Country Store, when the suspect rear ended a driver and failed to stop.

Police said the driver was the only one injured.
