For Bryant Vincent, he thought this day would never get here.

So after eight weeks in as Greenville's newly hired head football coach and athletic director, Vincent gets his chance to show what's ahead for the Tiger football program.

Vincent and his staff began spring workouts on Tuesday at Tiger Stadium with rising seventh- and eighth-graders. The staff will work with them through Thursday, then he and his staff will conduct a three-day practice session with rising freshmen starting next Monday before the varsity opens drills on April 24.

&#8220I'm ready to go out and coach,” Vincent said. &#8220I've been able to get a lot of administrative stuff done in the past eight weeks, but I'm ready to put the paperwork aside so I can get on the field with the guys.”

Vincent said that he had more than 100 young men sign up for spring drills just at the sixth and seventh-grade level, and he is expecting a freshman class of more than 70.

The Tigers coach said that with just three days of work that he plans on teaching the young players the fundamentals of the game and show them at least four basic offensive plays.

&#8220We want to stress the fundamentals of the game,” he said. &#8220We want them in the right stance and put them in the position that fits them. The whole idea with the young guys is to get their technique down so that everything else will become second nature when they achieve the varsity level.”

Before the varsity begins practice, the Tigers will host its first Lift-a-thon which will help in buying new uniforms. The Lift-a-thon will begin at 6 p.m. April 20 in the high school gymnasium. Admission is $2 per person.

Physicals for all Butler County student-athletes of all sports will be held April 18 at the Greenville High School gym. The physicals, which are $10 per person, are for athletes going into grades 7-12 next school year. Greenville athletes' physicals will be held starting at 5:30 p.m., Georgiana at 6 p.m. and McKenzie at 6:30.

The Greenville High football booster club Tiger Pride will hold its first meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the high school's auditorium on April 18. All members and those interested in becoming a member are urged to attend.

Vincent also announced that on May 11, Tiger Pride will host a kick-off classic fundraising steak dinner at 7 p.m. at the Dunbar Center in Greenville. Troy University coach Larry Blakeney will be the guest speaker. The cost is $25 per plate, which includes steak, potato, salad, bread and desert.
