The new look Greenville Tigers took to the practice field Monday for their first day of spring drills, and wound up the week with a short, inter-squad scrimmage at Tiger Stadium Friday.

Bryant Vincent, in his first year as head coach of the Tigers, spent much of the first week working on fundamentals and a new offensive and defensive scheme that will certainly make for a faster game.

&#8220We're going to be running three and four (receivers) wide with a no huddle shotgun offense,” said Vincent, who came to Greenville after serving as offensive coordinator at Spain Park. &#8220The players are real excited about it. We've been meeting with them from step one on basic terminology on how we can run our system and probably, by the end of spring, we'll have learned about 45 percent of the offense.”

Vincent said when the team breaks drills for summer, he hopes his bunch has mastered two to three run plays and six to eight pass plays. Then, by kickoff this fall, they'll be up to six or eight run plays and 22 to 26 pass plays.

&#8220Defensively I think we're going to be real strong. Offensively we'll be good too, but it's just going to take time because we're doing a lot of vertical pass routes and zone blocking schemes and they've never done much of that,” he said.

The Tigers will also have a new look at the quarterback position with Casey Weston transferring from Fort Dale Academy.

Weston, who led the Eagles to a semifinal berth in the Alabama Independent School Association's state championships this year will line up under center, splitting time with Lynn Lewis, who will move primarily to wide receiver.

&#8220With Casey it gives us an option to run and throw, which definitely fits this offense,” Vincent said. &#8220Our offense is based around a quarterback and with him and Lynn Lewis it gives us an option. It allows us to move Lynn to wide receiver which is definitely where he's most comfortable.”

While Vincent is happy with where his team is at this point in the year, he said there is much work to be done to get them ready for their first game.

&#8220We're behind fundamentally and technique wise and need to start from the ground up,” he said. &#8220I've been real pleased with the effort and attitude of the kids, but it just takes time. The kids are working hard and it's not going to turn around overnight, but come August, we'll be ready.”
