Majors can#039;t top Opp

The Opp Dixie Majors All-Star team swept through round robin play this week to earn the District Championship at Greenville's Beeland Park.

Opp beat Georgiana 16-0 on the first day, Luverne 5-3 on the second day and Greenville 3-2 in the final game.

Because Opp was undefeated through round robin play and every other team had at least one loss, Opp swept the championship without even having to play a playoff game.

The tournament got under way June 30 with Georgiana vs. Opp due to Brantley pulling out of the tournament.

Opp got on the board early with three runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Brent Hinds led Opp with four hits, including a triple and two doubles, while Riley Dunn finished with a pair of hits, including a double in the second inning.

Lee Martinez, Ryan Cooke and Ty McDaniel each scattered a hit for Opp, with Cooke hitting a RBI

double in the first inning.

Martinez and Cooke were the leading scorers for Opp with three runs apiece, while Brock Kelley, Holt Parker, Dunn and McDaniel each scored two runs apiece.

Jay Copeland and Hinds also each scored a run for Opp.

For Georgiana, David Taylor and Justin Ray each had a hit, with Rays coming as a double in the final inning.

Dunn picked up the win for Opp while Taylor picked up the loss for Georgiana.

Luverne 5, Greenville 2

Luverne used three runs over the last two innings on Day 2 to down Greenville, 5-2.

Daniel Brown, Brock Free and David Folmar each scattered two hits apiece to lead Luverne to victory. Jacob Sexton and Matthew Sipper also each had a hit for the winning team, with Sexton's hit coming as double in the third inning.

Sexton led all scorers with two runs while Ryan Brown, Daniel Brown and Free each scored a run.

For Greenville, Cory Ausderau was the leading hitter with a pair of singles.

Dusty Coker, David Moore and Brady Newton each had one hit, with Moore's hits coming as a sixth-inning double and Newton's coming off a seventh-inning home run blast.

Newton and Burnette scored the only two runs for Greenville.

Ryan Brown picked up the win for Luverne while David Moore picked up the loss for Greenville.

Greenville 28, Georgiana 0

After scoring two runs in the first inning and two more in the second, Greenville exploded for 10 runs in the third inning to beat Georgiana via the mercy rule, 28-0.

For insurance, Greenville added 14 mores in the fourth inning.

Brady Newton, Andrew Phelps and David Stephenson each had three hits to lead Greenville offensively while Stephen Croley, Cory Ausderau and Will Bowman each scattered a pair of singles.

Josh Booker, Kyle Nelson, Brad Heartsill, Scott Corley, Dusty Coker and Cory Johnson each scattered a single for the winning team.

Newton, Corley and Stephenson led Greenville in scoring with four runs scored apiece, while Brandon Burnette, Croley, Ausderau, Heartsill, Bowman, Phelps and Johnson each scored two runs apiece.

Josh Booker and Kyle Nelson also each scored a run.

Georgiana's three hits came from Andy Betterton, David Taylor and Chance Davis.

Opp 5, Luverne 3

Opp scored four runs in the first inning on Day 3, which was enough to hold off Luverne for the win, 5-3.

Ryan Cooke, Brock Kelley Holt Porter and Brent Hines all reached base and scored in the first and Opp never relinquished the lead.

Cam Copeland and Brent Hinds were the leading hitters with two hits apiece.

Spann added Opp's final run in the fourth inning.

For Luverne, Daniel Brown had two hits to lead offensively.

Jacob Sexton and Austin Brock also each had a hit for Luverne.

Brock Free, David Folmar and Daniel Brown each scored a run in the loss.

Luverne 14, Georgiana 4

Luverne scored eight runs in the first two innings on Day 4 to secure the victory over Georgiana, 14-4.

Jacob Sexton, Ryan Brown and Davis Lester each reached base and scored the first two innings, with David Folmar and Daniel Brown each also reaching base and scoring in the second inning.

Luverne was lead offensively by Ryan Brown, Daniel Brown and Lester with two hits apiece. Ryan knocked a triple in the second inning and Daniel knocked a double in the fourth.

Jacob Sexton, David Folmar, Cory Walden and Austin Brock also each had a hit, with Brock's coming as a double in the sixth inning.

Daniel Brown led all scorers with three runs while Sexton, Ryan Brown and Davis Lester each scored two.

Matthew Walden, Folmar, Cory Walden, Brock and Dalton Greer each scored one run for the winning team.

For Georgiana, Justin Ray led all hitters with a pair of hits, including a double in the sixth inning. Andy Betterton, Tereance Whittle, Chance Davis and Chris Scott each scattered a single.

Opp 3, Greenville 2

Brock Kelley was 2-for-2 with a double in the first inning on Day 4 to lead Opp to victory over Greenville and to the District Championship, 3-2.

Kelley and Lee Martinez each reached base and scored in the third inning and then Martinez scored again in the seventh to clinch the win.

Kelley was the leading hitter with Martinez, Holt Parker, Ryan Cooke and Ty McDaniel each had a hit.

For Greenville, Brady Newton was the leading hitter, going 3-for-4 . David Moore had two hits while Cory Ausderau, Brandon Burnette, Andrew Phelps and Josh Booker each scattered a single.

Newton and Lewis scored Greenville's two runs.

Brent Hinds earned the win for Opp.
