The Butler County Alumni Chapter of the University of Alabama will hold its annual meeting Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Cambrian Ridge.

This year's featured speaker is a former All-American and member of the All-Century team at Alabama, Tommy Wilcox.

Wilcox, who was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 1979, played under the legendary Paul &#8220Bear” Bryant, was a two-time All-American and a three-time All-SEC member.

&#8220(These meetings) are a chance to get the alumni together in support of the university,” Wilcox said. &#8220It's nice that people are interested enough to take time out of their busy schedule to get together in the name of Alabama.”

Just as members of a football team are a family, so are alumni, Wilcox said.

&#8220It's like when Coach Bryant spoke about family,” Wilcox said, &#8220it's a family thing and family is very important.”

Colin &#8220Big C” MacGuire, a former manager for the Crimson Tide during the Bryant era, said he is extremely excited about seeing and hearing Wilcox again.

&#8220It's going to be fun,” MacGurie said. &#8220Tommy was a great football player who should have some real funny stories.”

Fay Poole, the University of Alabama Butler County Alumni Chapter Chairman, said having a speaker like Wilcox is a great thing for the Alumni District 12. University of Alabama President Robert Witt and gymnastics head coach Sarah Patterson have also been speakers in recent years.

&#8220I hear he is really an entertaining speaker and I am looking forward to hearing him speak,” Poole said. &#8220It should be a great meeting.”

Wilcox said he plans to speak about the importance of Alabama football, Coach Bryant and Coach Shula, among other topics.

He also said he plans to share some of his favorite memories like the 1979 Tennessee game when the Tide, ranked No. 1 at the time, was down 17-0 at the half and came back to win, 21-17.

&#8220At the half, Coach Bryant came in the locker room and told us we were reading the newspapers too much and challenged us to look inside ourselves and he told us what it meant to wear that crimson jersey,” Wilcox said.

Wilcox, who now hosts his own outdoors show with special guest celebrities and former football greats, will also speak on the importance of getting outdoors.

&#8220When you can get people outdoors, away from their fax machines, telephones and Internet, you can see what that person is all about,” Wilcox said.

The meeting will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., with dinner and speakers following at 7 p.m.
