Brantley starts season with 49-0 thumping over Elba

The Brantley Bulldogs began the quest to return the Alabama High School Class 1A championship game Friday night in dominating fashion, downing visiting Elba, 49-0.

According to head coach David Lowery, the win was a team effort with contributions from many players.

Quarterback Jonathan Helms led the passing attack with six completions for 79 yards, while Anthony Gulley connected on three passes for 22 yards and one touchdown.

It was a spread out effort with four different players scoring.

Landon Morgan had one reception for a touchdown while James Pittman had one rushing touchdown and one on a 67-yard punt return, totaling 121 yards on the night.

Chris Booker led the touchdown parade for the Dawgs with three.

Booker rushed for 59 yards and two scores while adding the third on a 67-yard punt return.

Finishing off the scoring was Jeffrey Daniels with 43 yards and one six-pointer.

Marcus Owens was a perfect 7-of-7 on PAT's on the night.

Defensively, Daniels led the charge with seven tackles and one blocked punt.

Contributing six stops a piece were John Wright and Channing Booker while Jon Tyson chipped in five.

Thad Frazier added one interception to the mix.

&#8220We're very happy with our effort, but we must work hard and continue to improve.

We begin Region play this week against Pleasant Home, and (the schedule) gets tougher as the season progresses,” Brantley head coach David Lowery said.

The Bulldogs return home this Friday to host Pleasant Home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
