Valley of the shadow of depth

For the second time in three weeks, the Greenville Tigers will face off with a Top 10 team as the No. 7 Valley Rams come to Tiger Stadium Friday night.

&#8220These boys know what type of team Valley is,” Greenville head coach Bryant Vincent said. &#8220(Valley) beating (Charles Henderson) 35-0 says all it needs to say about how good they are.”

Following Friday night's 49-6 homecoming victory over Monroe County, Vincent said his Tigers have had a good week of practice, and that's a good thing considering Valley comes in bringing size, speed and experience.

&#8220They are big, fast and very physical,” Vincent said of Valley. &#8220They are just big.”

The Rams start 18 seniors on both sides of the ball, while the Tigers only start nine seniors.

In order for the Tigers to counteract the Rams' size, speed and experience, Vincent said his defense is going to have to continue playing they way they have in recent weeks.

&#8220We're going to have to swarm the football and lay it all out on the football field,” Vincent said.

The Tigers' defense held Monroe County to just 18 yards following an opening drive of 65 yards Friday night and have surrendered just 23 points over the last three games.

As an extra incentive for the Tiger defense, Greenville defensive coordinator Ernest Hill is a Valley graduate and would love nothing more to down his alma mater.

Following Friday night's homecoming victory, Hill said Valley is known for playing smash-mouth football and if the Tigers don't come out quick, Valley will.

&#8220We've got to attack them first because, if we don't, they will,” Hill said.

For the Tigers' offense, Vincent said quarterback Casey Weston is back near 100 percent following a separated shoulder two weeks ago

but sophomore Alex Phifer will miss 2-3 weeks after suffering a knee injury during Friday's game.

With this week's game being against a Top 10 team, Vincent said the Tiger Walk will be moved up to 6:15 p.m. to accommodate the fans.

Also, the theme for Friday's game is &#8220Gold and Black: Bring it Back,” and Vincent is encouraging everyone to wear either gold or black.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
