Bright orange pumpkins and festive fall-hued leaves are signs of the season. So are the smiling faces and patchwork-covered duds of your friendly neighborhood scarecrow.

Greenville Main Street is sponsoring a Scarecrow Contest to celebrate the fall season.

&#8220This is something that is fun for everyone and it certainly makes the town look really good,” Main Street Director Nancy Idland said.

Both businesses and residences alike are encouraged to get involved in this colorful competition. There are couple of stipulations, Idland said.

&#8220We do ask that the scarecrows be in good taste and constructed to withstand the weather. They should also be built in a manner that allows them to be left unattended.”

One entry is allowed per residence or business, and there is no charge to enter the contest.

Imagination and creativity could earn you cash, Idland said.

&#8220$100 will go to the first place winner, $75 to the second place winner and $50 to the third place winner.”

Scarecrows should be set up and ready for judging no later than Wednesday, October 11.

&#8220We will announce the winners on Saturday, October 28 at the Sweet Gum Bottom Blues Festival. We want everyone to come out and enjoy all the wonderful music, food, kids' activities and more at the Blues Fest,” Idland said.

Stop by the Greenville Main Street Office on Commerce St. to pick up a scarecrow contest form or contact Nancy Idland at 354-2802 for more information. Forms should be returned by Oct. 9.
