n Tax Collection Delay

Butler County, under the provisions of Act 160 and the Federal Court Order has for the last two years been involved in a countywide reappraisal. This means that all property located in Butler County has been revalued and will be taxed at values that represent Fair Market Value. But, due to new statewide procedures and compliance regulations, Butler County will not be ready to collect taxes starting on Oct. 1, 2006. Adequate time adjustments will be allowed for this delay. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Liberty Methodist Church will observe its annual homecoming on Oct. 8. Services will begin at 11 a.m., followed by lunch. Rev. Richard Rouse, Liberty Pastor, will be the speaker.

n Garland VFD Trade Day

Garland VFD will host a &#8220Garland Trade Day” Oct. 14, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Garland Firehouse. Festivities include arts and crafts, gospel singing, door prizes, a country store filled with homemade jellies, cakes, peanut brittle and boiled peanuts and plenty of booths with vendors of all kinds.

n Board Meeting

The Butler County Board of Education will conduct its next regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at McKenzie High School in McKenzie. The meeting will be held in the school auditorium. The public is encouraged to attend.

n Giant Garage Sale in Troy

Troy Parks & Recreation will host the largest garage sale Troy and Pike County has ever had. Over 100 booths will be available from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006 at the City of Troy Community Recreation Center. n Elks Meeting

The Elks of America are holding a planning meeting Oct. 25 at the Greenville Shoney's at 7 p.m. The Elks have community targeted programs to help youth with scholarships, sports sponsorships, anti drug education and scouting. We also provide community assistance with Veterans programs and helping the less fortunate with food baskets. We also provide a Youth Camp on Lake Martin near Tallassee for weekend camping. If interest can be developed among 100 men and women in the area the Elks will start a new facility in Greenville.

n Georgiana Class of ‘53 Reunion

The Georgiana High School Class of 1953 will meet Sat., Oct. 28 at the Senior Nutrition Center located on Palmer Ave.in Georgiana. Doors will open at 10 a.m.; attendees are asked to bring finger foods and beverages of their choice. n Casting Call for &#8220Honeydripper”

The casting call continues for the upcoming film &#8220Honeydripper” which begins filming Oct. 16 in Butler County. Everyone, particularly African-Americans, are encouraged to apply. 500 extras and 18 speaking roles will be cast. n Disabled American Veterans seek new members

The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 67 is seeking new members. The unit meets every fourth Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Building at the Butler County Fairgrounds.

The unit also has a junior program for ages newborn to age 17.

The unit won first place for community service in the 10 to 50-member category at state competition. Unit 67 Commander is Alberta Johnson.

n Free Tutoring Classes

&#8220Every Child Deserves A Chance” is now offering free tutoring classes in the areas of reading, English and math on Mondays and Wednnesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Greenville Housing Authority Recreation Room to students enrolled in Butler County Schools in grades K-12. n Adult Education Classes

The ADPE through the LBWCC Adult Education Consortium is offering classes for adults who did not complete their high school education or need to strengthen educational and job skills.

Old Greenville High Campus (BCECC) – 6 to 8:30 p.m.
