Hoping to flip last season's 1-9 record to 9-1 this year, the Greenville Tigers fell just short and dropped to 8-2 with Friday night's 34-19 loss at Wetumpka.

Although the Tigers trailed 20-13 at the half, the Class 6A Indians proved to be too much and improved to 5-4 on the season with the win.

&#8220We didn't play very good at all tonight,” Greenville head coach Bryant Vincent said. &#8220We just didn't execute on offense and couldn't sustain or drives because of turnovers or penalties.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Vincent said his Tigers missed too many tackles.

&#8220They out big-played us and they hurt us with their speed,” Vincent said. &#8220The bottom line is they whipped out tails and won the game.”

&#8220It just shows us if you don't execute on offense and don't tackle on defense, you're going to lose,” he added.

Following the game, Vincent told his team not to get their heads down and that they should be proud of all they have accomplished thus far.

&#8220We had a tremendous regular season and I am proud of what they accomplished during the regular season,” Vincent said. &#8220But if this game doesn't open our eyes, our season is going to be over Friday night.”

The Tigers will begin the AHSAA Class 5A playoffs at home Friday night against the Demopolis Tigers.

The last time the two programs squared off, Demopolis hung 70 points on Greenville and that is something Vincent wants his team to remember.

&#8220Demopolis is an outstanding program,” Vincent said. &#8220We're trying to build a program here but they have an established program.”

Kickoff for Friday night's opening round game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
