PIGSKIN PICKS

By Irby Paul Freely

The Luverne Tigers will pay a visit to Pigskin Purgatory this Thursday night to tangle with the 9 and 0 Brantley Bulldogs. The Tigers, who also sport a 9 and 0 record, will try to break a 4-game losing streak to the much powerful Dogs. Over the last several years the series has been the Dogs with 8 wins and the Cats with 7 wins.

The Dogs have been told by their coaches they will have no competition in the regular season and not to expect any until their third round playoff game. I guess these guys watch a lot of tape.

The Tigers will be the best team the Dogs will have to face in the regular season. The Cats will be minus one of their best backs, and this will hurt on offense and defense. The way I see it, the Dogs will prevail. Home cooking will start at 7 p.m. LHS-12, BHS-31.

The Flying Squadron will host St. James. Coming off of a 12-19 loss to Loachapoka last week, this will be the swan song for a lot of Flyboys, and they will go out with a 4 and 6 record and start round ball Monday. St.J.A.-35, HHS-13.

This week the CCA Cougars will host Central Christian Academy of Selma in the opening round of the AISA state playoffs. The Blue Cats will roll and advance to the semi-finals of their class. I see it CCA-20, Central Christian, 13.

The University of Alabama will host Mississippi State University. The Bulldogs are still rebuilding and have had a rough year. They have played several close games only to fall short at the end. But those kindly red clad Pachyderms will do everything in their means to give the Dogs a win. I hope the Tide will play up to their potential and not to their competition. I see it MSU-13, UA-31.

The Auburn Tigers will host Arkansas State. This one will not be pleasant for the Arkansas eleven; the Tigers will take out the frustrations from Arkansas on the little guys from out west. The Tigers will glide on to Georgia. ASU-7, AU-42.

The T-town Trojans will host UL-Lafayette in a conference game. The Trojans have a lot to prove after their lackluster performance last week against North Texas. I think the Troy staff will make the adjustments needed. I see it UL-L-14, TU-31.
