Seniors from across Butler County enjoyed brisk walks, informative talks and a chance to win prizes during the Community Wellness Walk and Health and Fair held in Greenville Thursday.

The day started out with several seniors gathering at Beeland Park for registration and some open-air exercise on a rather raw and chilly morning.

&#8220We've made three laps around the place, that's not bad,” Mary Braden, senior services director for the City of Greenville said, as the group prepared to relocate to the Greenville Nutrition Center on Cedar St.

At the center, several vendors had booths set up offering seniors a cornucopia of information on topics of interest.

Covenant Hospice, Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, Benefit Planners, Comfort Care Hospice, AlaCare, Amedisys, Davis and Neal, Attorneys, Wood Clinical Services, the Area Agency on Aging and the Scooter Store were among those sharing advice, health screenings, brochures and &#8220goodie bags” with the seniors present. Wood Clinical Services also offered pneumonia and flu shots on site. Many of the vendors also donated door prizes for the event.

&#8220We've had a really good turnout today. At least 100 people must have come through,” Braden said that afternoon as volunteers prepared to pass out free box lunches to those aged 60 and over.

Mary Wallace, director of the Georgiana Nutrition Center, brought several of her clients from South Butler County. &#8220Yeah, yeah, Georgiana,” she called out with glee when one of the south Butler seniors won a door prize.

&#8220It's been a good day,” Wallace said.

The cold, overcast skies didn't put a damper on the fair.

&#8220We really had more people than we ever expected, with the weather today,” Cathy Brown, senior director, said.

The event was sponsored by the South Central Alabama Development Commission-Area Agency on Aging in cooperation with the Camellia Senior Center, and the Greenville and Georgiana Senior Nutrition Centers.
