A Georgiana High School teacher's aide resigned on Monday night following allegations of inappropriate conduct during a scheduled in-school-suspension class.

Robert Kelly, 59, submitted his resignation to the Board of Education during a special called meeting on Monday, according to Superintendent Mike Looney. Looney said Kelly had worked as a teacher's aide for nearly nine years with the school system.

&#8220Mr. Kelly's resignation occurred as a mutual agreement between him and the Board that it was in his and the school's best interest that he resign,” said Looney.

Looney said Kelly had been placed on administrative leave with pay following the allegations on Monday morning.

Looney said students were in the classroom when the alleged incident is supposed to have occurred. A student notified Georgiana High School administrators, said Looney.

&#8220We're not really sure what happened – if anything,” said Looney. &#8220The incident is under investigation.”

Looney said the matter had been turned over – as required – to investigating authorities with the Georgiana Police Department.

n In other business, the Board approved a bid of $23,875 to purchase 30 security cameras that will be installed at Greenville High School.

&#8220We're going to start with Greenville High School because it is the largest in our district. But we plan on installing cameras at every school in our system.”

Looney publicly thanked Greenville Police Chief Lonzo Ingram and city officials for helping to secure the funding, which is paid for by a grant through Homeland Security.

&#8220As many are aware, Greenville High School recently received the safe school award for the second consecutive year,” said Looney. &#8220It's measures such as this that puts Butler County schools on the leading edge of ensuring our students are safe.”

Looney said the cameras will be installed in multiple classrooms, as well as hallways and on the exterior of GHS.

Looney said central office personnel and the GPD will be able to view the cameras remotely through the Internet.
