Gov. Bob Riley has awarded a $60,000 grant to improve recreational opportunities in north Crenshaw County.

Funds will be used to build a 10-foot-wide, all purpose paved trail in the town of Petrey.

&#8220This trail will encourage people to get outside and exercise and it will make the town of Petrey a better place to live,” Riley said.

&#8220I am proud to play a role in fulfilling this project.”

The quarter-mile trail will be built adjacent to the town's community center and playground.

It will be lighted to encourage use after dark and will be flanked by benches.

A parking area and path will make the trail accessible for the handicapped.

Riley notified Mayor Curtis Petrey that the grant had been approved.

The grant is being administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and was awarded from funds made available to the state from the Federal Highway Administration's Recreational Trails Program.
