The Alabama State Troopers Office reported 12 car accidents and six non-threatening injuries throughout Dallas, Hale, Perry and Wilcox counties during the 78-hour New Year's travel period, said Public Information Officer John Reese on Tuesday.

New Year's travel began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight on Monday.

The Alabama Department of Public Safety estimated 14 people would die on Alabama roadways during the travel period. According to preliminary reports, Reese said seven people have died.

One fatality each occurred in Tuscaloosa, Pike, Jackson, Calhoun, and Crenshaw counties.

Two fatalities occurred in Marion County.

Reese said five of crash victims were not wearing seatbelts and at least one of the fatalities was alcohol related.

In all, 16 people lost their lives on Alabama roadways between Christmas and New Year's.

During the Christmas travel period, nine fatalities were reported – five in Montgomery County and one each in Cullman, Madison, Cleburne and Lowndes counties.

In a previous report, Reese said five of the crash victims were not wearing seatbelts and at least four of the fatalities were alcohol related.
