Session I: The Settlers: Your ancestors, Immigrants, Native Americans (Includes an overview of resources, and repositories.)

Session II: The Land: Mapping the area, acquiring the land, documenting the land.

Session III: The Wars: Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Indian Wars, And Mexican Wars.

Session IV: The Politics: From Territory to Territory, From Territory to Statehood, Documenting the settlers.

Discussion of research sources including early maps, military records, land records, early census records, Panton, Leslie papers and trading post records, Benjamin Hawkins papers, Draper papers, Spanish, French and English records and influence, Indian records.

About the presenter

Elizabeth C. Wells, B.A., M.A., M.L.S., Special Collection Librarian, Samford University, Birmingham, AL. 

Mrs. Wells is active in the genealogical and historical community and has served as past president of the Alabama Genealogical Society, the Birmingham Genealogical Society, and is a founder and past president of the Society of Alabama Archivists. 

Her research and preservation interests include Alabama church, public and family records.  She is co-author of &#8220The History of Judson College” and is a member of the faculty of the” Institute for Genealogical and Historical Research” program at Samford University.

We need an accurate registration number, as each participant will receive seminar notes which include copies of PowerPoint screens used in the program.

Following the seminar, there will be a short presentation of continuing plans for organization of the Southwest Alabama Sons of American Revolution chapter. 

Mike Wells, former state President of Alabama Sons of the American Revolution, together with several current members of other SAR chapters will be prepared to work individually with anyone who needs assistance with completion of their lineage paperwork for membership application submission.
