On Monday, many organizations observed Sanctity of Life Day on the 34th anniversary of the famous case Roe v. Wade, which in essence legalized abortion.

It is a ruling that has been controversial since it first came down in 1973, and many organizations showed their support for both sides of the issue.

advocates both for and against abortion, marking Monday’s 34th anniversary of a pivotal U.S. Supreme Court decision, said developments in Alabama in the past year have been beneficial to their cause.

A handful of members of the Montgomery chapter of the National Organization for Women gathered on the steps of the State Capitol to celebrate the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 that legalized abortion.

Drivers honked horns and waved to the group, which held signs with messages including &uot;No more wire hangers&uot; and &uot;Keep abortion safe and legal.&uot;

The Alabama Alliance Against Abortion hosted a similar rally on Thursday in Huntsville, where former Chief Justice Roy Moore delivered the keynote address. A statewide NOW rally was held in Birmingham on Saturday, as was a gathering organized by the anti-abortion group Sanctity of Life Ministries.

Public attention focused on the issue in Alabama last year when the Summit Medical Center in Birmingham, one of the state’s 10 abortion clinics, was closed because of several violations.

Spurred by findings in the Summit case, the Alabama Department of Public Health proposed stronger regulations as a result.

While abortion at times might be a good option in case of health reasons or rape, it should also make us think that there could be another option.
