For the second game in a row, the Greenville Tigers varsity basketball team took an early lead only to watch it fizzle away as the Central-Hayneville Lions overcame a 17-point deficit Saturday night to take the win, 80-77.

The Senior Night game turned out to be a sloppy one with five players fouling out and almost 60 fouls being called.

The Tigers took an early eight-point lead at the end of the first period and held that lead through halftime before increasing it to 12-points at the end of the third when junior Michael Peagler drained at shot at the buzzer, sending the crowd to its feet.

That would be the last moment of joy for the Tigers.

Central-Hayneville stormed a comeback in the final period and took the lead with just one minute remaining.

For the Tigers, Peagler was the leading scorer with 17 points, followed by Tyus Robinson with nine points, Andres Gentry with eight points, Edward Searight and James Daniels each with seven points, Casey Weston and Kelcius Pate each with five points, Darel Carter with four points, Wilshad Smith with three points and D.J. Carter with two points.

Jermichael Rudolph was the leading scorer for the Lions with 15 points and Teude Rudolph finished with 11 in the win.

The Tigers will face Wilcox-Central in Camden Friday at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the area tournament.

The championship game will be held Monday at 7 p.m.

Calhoun 79, Greenville 77

The Greenville Tigers held an early four-point lead Friday but the Calhoun Tigers would not be denied and held on for the close win, 79-77.

Michael Peagler was the game's leading scorer with 26 points for Greenville, followed by Andres Gentry with 14 points, Tyus Robinson with 11 points, Wilshad Smith, Darel Carter and James Daniels with five points apiece, Edward Searight with seven points and Casey Weston with four points.

De Shawn Caldwell led Calhoun with 19 points, followed by Ricky Davison and Keltin Garrett with 15 points each and Jermichael Davis with 14 points.

Girls

Central-Hayneville 38, Greenville 28

Ronald Bogan's Greenville Lady Tigers took the lead at halftime Saturday night but could not hold it as the Central-Hayneville Lions eased their way to victory, 38-28.

Lakeeta Bonner, who fouled out, was the leading scorer for the Lady Tigers with eight points, followed by Alexis Salter with seven points, Nicole Norton with six points, Nikia Powell with four points, Ranesha Gardner with two points and Victoria Gentry with one point.

Shonda Surles was the game's leading scorer with 19 points for the Lions while teammate Sherelle Ivory finished with 10 points in the win.

The Lady Tigers will play at 6 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the area tournament in Demopolis.

The championship game will be Saturday at 7 p.m.

Calhoun 54, Greenville 33

The Calhoun Tigers held an 18-point halftime lead over the Greenville Tigers Friday night and never looked back as the took the win, 54-33.

Alexis Salter was the leading scorer for Greenville with eight points, followed by Nikia Powell with seven points, Nicole Norton with six points, Lakeeta Bonner with five points, Victoria Gentry with four points, Tamara Truitt with two points and Rachel Williams with one.

For Calhoun, Baker was the leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Smith, James and Alexander with seven points apiece.

B-team

Greenville 56, Central-Hayneville 48

The Greenville Tigers B-team prevented a sweep for the Central-Hayneville Lions Saturday by opening up the night with an eight-point win, 56-48.

Mikwese Claybourne was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 11 points, followed by Nicholas McHenry with 10 points, Marcus Mickles and Christian William with eight points apiece, Devon Gaffney and Brently Hill with seven points apiece, Marcus Crum with three points and Traves Yelder with two points.

Mike Burke lead all scorers with 12 points for the Lions, followed by Tracy White with 11 points and Adrian Olives with eight points.

Greenville 44, Calhoun 37

Holding a three-point lead at the half Friday night, the Greenville Tigers settled down both offensively and defensively in the second half to take the seven-point win over the Calhoun Tigers, 44-37.

Brently Hill was the leading scorer for Greenville with 11 points, followed by Mikwese Claybourne with nine points, Nicholas McHenry and Marcus Mickles with eight points apiece, Traves Yelder with four points and Marcus Crum with three points.

For Calhoun, Kwamane Davison was the game's leading scorer with 12 points and Jarmarques Davison had 10 points in the win.
