A routine traffic stop by the Crenshaw County Sheriff's Office resulted in a couple being arrested and charged with the manufacturing of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), the trafficking of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and the chemical endangerment of a child.

On Feb. 1, Jerry Kilpatrick, 41, of Driver Road in Dozier, was stopped for a traffic offense by sheriff's deputies, who then noticed possible meth items in the vehicle. According to Investigator Robin Daniels, Kilpatrick gave permission for the search, in which deputies found three grams of crystal meth. He was arrested and placed in the Crenshaw County Jail.

Daniels said that Kilpatrick told the deputies that he had one can of baby's milk with him, that the infant was three weeks old, and that the one can of milk was all the child had to eat.

The Covington County Drug Task Force and Covington County Department of Human Resources were notified, and they took the milk to the residence. Upon arrival, Daniels said that officers saw enough suspicious items to obtain a search warrant of the residence.

As a result, the baby boy's mother, Amy Norris of Brantley, was also arrested and charged with the same charges as Kilpatrick. She was released on bond in Covington County, and the infant, who was 20 days old, was placed with family.

Kilpatrick was also charged with the same charges in Covington County and had a bond set at $4.5 million. He is still in the Crenshaw County Jail under a $50,000 cash bond.
