Last Friday, local elementary schools joined schools around the nation in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Dr. Seuss classic, &#8220The Cat in the Hat,” along with the March 2nd birthday of children's author Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Schools are also recognizing the 10th anniversary of the National Education Association's &#8220Read Across America” campaign.

At the Luverne Head Start Center, located on the Crenshaw County Board of Education campus, the children celebrated with a &#8220Dr. Seuss Fun Friday.”

Deborah Butler, Family Service Specialist for the Head Start center, said that the children started the day with green eggs and ham for breakfast.

&#8220They really enjoyed that,” Butler said, smiling.

Next on the day's agenda was making the famous red and white-striped Dr. Seuss hats, followed by the children watching the movie &#8220The Cat in the Hat.”

&#8220We allowed them to come to school today in their pajamas and slippers since it was a special day,” Butler said.

In addition, four Luverne High School honor students visited the Head Start center and read several Dr. Seuss books to the children. Those LHS students included Amanda Dobbs, Telesha Carter, Samantha Strops and Bethany Stroud.

Also on March 2, Luverne Head Start parents were invited to attend a workshop on &#8220Every Child Ready to Read.” Butler said that this workshop was designed for the parents to learn what a child is expected to know about reading by the time he or she enters kindergarten.

In addition to Butler, the staff at the Luverne Head Start Center also includes Harriet McFarlin, OCAP Head Start Director, Brandi Lindo, teachers' aide, Callie Clayton, teacher, and Dorothy Jordan, supervisor of the Luverne Head Start Center.
