Highland Home School and its on-campus organizations have made great strides in the past week to improve their already impressive records. The students who are a part of these diverse clubs are the only reasons for their advancements. From award winners to next generation participators, each organization has become a better piece of the HHS puzzle.

This past Friday, Mrs. Rebecca Sims and her group of talented English scholars ventured to the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College campus in Andalusia.

The National English Honor Society of HHS participated in the annual English tournament held by the LBWCC. The first-year team went to Andalusia not expecting to return with the top awards in certain categories.

Kayla McGough and Stephen Davis were the two who pulled wins for the team. Stephen Davis placed 2nd in the composition competition followed by Kayla McGough with an honorable mention.

To add to Stephen's victory, he took home first prize in the literature test and creative writing divisions. Because of his narrative on the two people left at the end of the world, Stephen was named the most promising young writer of the short story contest.

For the past week, many young ladies have trained and conditioned for the twelve spots available on the varsity cheerleading squad.

Last week contained plenty of learning and exercising of the material the young ladies would use to impress the judges. The senior cheerleaders shared all they knew with the cast of girls to prepare them for the day of tryouts.

After all was said and done, twelve of the fifteen who tried out became HHS cheerleaders. Marcie Holladay, Nyesha Berry, Pashae Shepherd, Latandra Shepherd, Sha'Quayla Rogers, Nikki Etheridge, Blair Daughtery, Rebecca Sexton, Kayla Beasley, Tayaqua Johnson, and Brittany Pouncey were chosen to represent Highland Home School as cheerleaders for 2007-2008.

Mr. Johnson and the National FFA Chapter of Highland Home School convened on Wednesday, February 28. The members discussed their annual community service project, FFA teams, uniformed dress, and ambitions for the upcoming summer and school year.

Afterwards, Mr. Johnson fired up his grill, and the FFA had its yearly cookout to welcome new members and to greet old ones.

The FFA Chapter will lose many of its officers come graduation in May, but Mr. Johnson and the FFA are confident that the individuals who are a part of the organization will do more than make up for the losses.

The club sponsors and members have done their parts to make Highland Home School a better institution. Now that all of that is done, it is up to the students who have done all they could in the classrooms to prove their academic maturity.

The Alabama High School Graduation Exam has been administered this week on the HHS campus, and Principal Joseph Eiland is positive that the results will prove HHS's intellectual achievements and abilities.
