A parent is upset his son was suspended from a Greenville school following a fight and said administrators need to look at disciplining students for physical altercations on a case-by-case basis.

Greg Luckie said his son was given a five-day suspension for a fight on March 1 at Greenville Middle School. Luckie said his son was struck three times - telling his assailants he did not want to fight - before fighting back.

Luckie addressed members of the Board of Education on Thursday night.

&#8220There's no justiceŠno equality when it comes to fighting,” said Luckie, who said he did not think it was fair his son was suspended for trying to defend himself.

Luckie said the student that started the fight admitted to doing so in front of school administrators. The student was also suspended.

The Butler County Student Handbook and Code of Conduct lists fighting as a Class III offense, with first offenders receiving ISSP, corporal punishment, extended work assignments, detention, short-term alternative school, or suspension for up to five days. Parents are also contacted.

Superintendent Mike Looney said school officials maintain a strict policy when it comes to fighting. He agreed that Luckie's son had a right to defend himself, but said teachers and administrators often do not see who starts altercations and must act accordingly.

This is not the first time Luckie has addressed the board.

In May 2006 he asked the board to investigate a pair on incidents in which he said two of his children were attacked on school grounds.

Luckie said he took those separate issues to the State Board of Education and said he felt since then that he had been labeled a &#8220troublemaker.”

&#8220I don't want to be seen as a troublemaker and I'm not a troublemaker but it's very frustrating to a parent to not get answers,” he said.

Looney said he and Principal Jai Hill at GMS would work with Luckie.

&#8220We want to work with him and we're more than willing to work with Mr. Luckie to allay his concerns,” said Looney.
