Playing in the first area game of the season Tuesday, the Greenville Tigers varsity baseball team managed only one hit as the Demopolis Tigers took the victory, 6-0.

&#8220We just struggled at the plate,” Greenville head coach Brad Horn said. &#8220We couldn't put any hits together,”

Demopolis opened an early 2-0 first-inning lead over Greenville after three of the first four batters reached base by either a walk or by being hit by a pitch.

Demopolis added another run in the third and in the fourth before scoring the final two runs in the fifth inning.

Offensively for Greenville, junior Casey Weston had the only hit.

Six Greenville batters struck out a total of eight times.

For Demopolis, Scott Cannon and Kyle Thrasher were the leading hitters, each going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Chris Griffin and Rob Rorie also each had a hit in the win.

On the mound, David Kent earned the win for Demopolis while Weston picked up the loss after giving up four walks, five hits and four hit batters.

&#8220We would have been fine had we just not hit so many batters,” Horn said. &#8220But we would walk a guy, hit another one and then they would get a hit.”

Greenville will return to action today as they play host to Pike County in a double-header. The first game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
