The Fort Dale Academy tennis teams faced some stiff competition this week, but still managed to emerge victorious in more than half the matches.

Against Lee-Scott Academy Thursday, the Eagle girls took the win, 5-1. The girls also swept Tuesday's matches at Cottage Hill, 7-0.

The boy's didn't fare as well against Lee-Scott, losing 7-0. The boys did, however, play solid at Cottage Hill Tuesday, finishing with a split match, 3-3.

In Thursday's matches, Lee-Scott's Hannah Fisher, the defending state champion, won the only match for the Warriors by defeating Fort Dale's Whitney Jacks 6-0, 6-3.

&#8220You can literally teach by the way she plays,” Fort Dale head coach Johnny Mack Brown said of Fisher.

The Eagles took the remaining events with Renee Scott defeating Austill Barrett 6-2, 6-3, Elizabeth Dunklin defeating Sonam Sayania 6-1, 6-2, Kayla Butts defeating Mary Margret James 6-1, 6-1 and Ulli Sandstrom defeating D.D. Knight 6-1, 6-1.

In double's action, Dunklin and Scott defeated Sayania and James 10-0.

The Lee-Scott No. 1 through No. 3 boy's players shut out the Eagles in straight sets, starting with Drew Tatum defeating Fort Dale's Andrew Jones 6-0, 6-0.

&#8220I was on the court about 30 minutes,” Jones said.

&#8220And Andrew is a really good player,” Brown added.

Lee-Scott's No. 2 player, Gary Fuller, also defeated Stephen Butts 6-0, 6-0, just as Hayden Gunter defeated Logan Ausderau 6-0, 6-0.

&#8220Those guys aren't only the best players in the state, they may be the best players in the southeast,” Brown said of Tatum and Fuller.

Will Hester defeated Fort Dale's David Foshee 6-2, 6-1 and James Diskin shut out Sean McKeague 6-0, 6-0.

The Warriors also took the double's events with Tatum and Fuller defeating Jones and Butts 10-2 and Gunter and Hester defeating Foshee and Ausderau 10-1.

In Tuesday's matches at Cottage Hill, the girls lost only five games.

Whitney Jacks defeated Samantha Parrot 6-0, 6-1, Renee Scott defeated Susan Ramsay 6-0, 6-0, Elizabeth Dunklin defeated Chelsea Scott 6-0, 6-1, Kayla Butts defeated Ansley Horn 6-1, 6-0 and Ulli Sandstrom defeated Hannah Etheridge 6-0, 6-0.

In double's action, Jacks and Scott defeated Parrot and Horn 6-1, 6-1 and Dunklin and Butts defeated Etheridge and Patrick 6-0, 6-0.

The Fort Dale boy's started off strong with Andrew Jones defeating Grant Martin 6-0, 6-2.

Stephen Butts defeated Grant Ramsay next for the Eagles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, followed by Cottage Hill's Blake Martin defeating Fort Dale's Logan Ausderau 7-6, 6-2 and Matt Hancock defeating Sean McKeague 7-5, 6-4.

In double's action, Jones and Butts defeated Martin and Johnson 6-1, 6-2, while Ramsay and Martin defeated Ausderau and Foshee 5-7, 6-4 and 6-1.

The Eagles will return to the court April 5 as they play host to the Crenshaw Christian Academy Cougars at 3 p.m.

Junior varsity

Playing in the first season of junior varsity tennis at Fort Dale, the Eagles experienced perfection Monday as the boys and girls combined to shut out the Monroe Academy Volunteers, 10-0.

&#8220We've had such a positive response to playing tennis that we've had to field a JV team for this first time,” Brown said.

In the girl's action, Taylor Autrey defeated Camille Coats 8-2, Harper Lea Heartsill Houston 8-2, Kennedy Harris defeated Dillie Martin 8-1, Barrett Leverette defeated Alex Watson 8-1, Angelena Harris defeated Kelsie Lugue 8-1, Lauren Lewis defeated Jessie 8-0 and Haley Robinson defeated Jesslen 8-6.

In double's action, Autrey and Heartsill defeated Watson and Kelsie 8-2 and Harris and Leverette also defeated Robinson and Coats 8-2.

In the boy's action, Mitchell Lewis defeated Jedd House 8-0 and Matthew Butts defeated Gregory Oakley 8-0.

In double's play, Perry Singleton and Matt Langford defeated House and Oakley 8-0.
