If happiness is a warm puppy or a cozy hand-stitched quilt, then the Butler County Humane Society has the perfect opportunity for you.

The BCHS is now selling raffle tickets for a quilt, lovingly stitched by five local ladies: Naomi Vickers, Maxine Rogers, Mertice Porterfield, Erlene Mullins and Virginia Cole.

&#8220The quilt is beautiful. It has lots of lovely, subtle shades of blue, red, tan and green. The ladies did such a great job quilting it,” said Kandys Killough of the BCHS.

The origins of the quilt are somewhat mysterious.

&#8220We were out in front of Wal-Mart one day with some of the animal shelter pets up for adoption and a lady motioned me over. She gave me this sack,” Killough explained.

&#8220Inside there was a quilt top, with a note attached with a safety pin. The note said, ‘This string quilt was pieced by an elderly woman in her latter years to pass the time. Sometime I will let you know who it is.

Your secret pal.' Of course, I would like to know just who it is!”

The completed quilt is on display for the next two weeks at First Lowndes Bank in Greenville. It will be making its rounds of area banks and will ultimately &#8220be seen all over town,” Killough said.

&#8220We are selling raffle tickets at $1 per ticket, with all proceeds going to our animal shelter and these abandoned and stray pets. Right now we have seven jars all over town to collect the tickets.”

Killough said the quilt will likely be on display until next spring.
