Law officers seized an estimated $7,500 in illegal steroids during a traffic stop on Highway 31 in McKenzie on Thursday.

Brian Christopher McCown, 27, and Shana Lynn Douglas, 24, both of Tennessee, were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia following a vehicle search by Greenville police officers, Butler County sheriff's deputies and McKenzie police.

The vehicle, a 1997 Lexus, was stopped at approximately 3:59 p.m. on Thursday for speeding and the driver, Douglas, was unable to produce a driver's license, said McKenzie Police Chief Clint Reaves. Greenville investigator Byron Russell and Chief Deputy Joe Salter arrived to assist Reaves during the stop, obtaining a consent to search the vehicle.

The steroids were discovered in a black bag in the trunk of the car, according to sheriff's reports.

Harden said McCown and Douglas told police they were traveling to Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

As of Friday, both McCown and Douglas were incarcerated in the Butler County Jail. Bond for each was set at $13,000, said Sheriff Kenny Harden.

Officers also seized $600 in assorted U.S. currency as well as the Lexus, said Harden. Steroids recovered include 14 bottles of 10 ml Anatestryl, 10 bottles of 10 ml Decatestryl, 24 bottles of 10 ml Protestryl, and other bottles containing tablets and liquids that officers have yet to identify.
