It's not purely acoustic blues or strictly old-time country. This music is a tasty blend of vaudeville and medicine show tunes, vintage country, blues from the ‘30s and spirituals.

We're talking about the Alabama Gravy Soppers, who will be bringing their unique brand of &#8220unruly string band music” to the Camellia City this weekend.

The three-man group with their &#8220slightly out-of-control nostalgia” will be performing in Confederate Park Saturday night to kick off the Main Street Concerts in the Park Series for 2007.  The music begins at 6 p.m.; bring your lawn chairs and quilts and prepare for tunes alfresco.

Guitarist Ashley Carr, bassist Warren Colter and mandolinist Ford Boswell have been pickin' and grinnin' together since 2003, traveling from their Montgomery base across the southeast to perform everywhere from Nashville's Station Inn to many festivals and late-night juke joints. Sopper tunes include &#8220Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens,” &#8220Nancy Jane” and &#8220Don't You See That Train.”

Bluegrass purists sometimes look down their noses at the group's unusual instrumentation, but Carr says, &#8220if you anything about acoustic blues, old-time country and roots music, you'll realize we've done our homework.”

Main Street Director Nancy Idland says, &#8220This is a terrific group that is sure to gain new fans in Greenville with their music. Come out and enjoy a great free concert in the park!”

Along with the live music, a bevy of kind-hearted local ladies will be giving up their long tresses as they donate their ponytails on-site to &#8220Locks of Love” and &#8220Expressions of Love,” two organizations who take donated hair and create wigs for cancer patients.

Approximately 25 women are donating their hair in honor or memory of a friend or family member with cancer.

Along with the mass hair cutting and music, concessions courtesy of the Greater Greenville Service League will be available.

All proceeds from food sales will go to the 2007 Relay For Life.

&#8220I think it will be a great evening - fun, really inspirational and a wonderful community event,” says Jill Stallworth, organizer of the hair donation.
