Thursday night was the final Team Captains meeting for the 30-plus teams participating in the 2007 American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

The annual event, slated for Friday, May 11 at the Greenville YMCA, aims to raise $100,000 for the continued fight against cancer.

During the board meeting held earlier in the evening, it was announced more than $25,000 in sponsorship monies had already been deposited, with additional funds still coming in.

Each of the team captains was challenged by Relay Chair Joan Reynolds to encourage every team member to contribute at least $100 to their team totals.

&#8220Every dollar truly counts, so everyone needs to do their part in order for us to reach our goal this year. Have the biggest teams you can, and work to make it happen,” Reynolds said.

In spite of last weekend's inclement weather, several Relay For Life teams had success with fundraising events.

The Harley's Angel team, sponsor of the Motorcycle Poker Run slated for last Saturday afternoon, raised more than $500 with the event.

&#8220We had many, many people who planned to be in the event but the weather caused a lot of cancellations,” said Team Captain April Langford.

&#8220We had to start the ride early and cut it shorter than planned, but we are still proud to say we had 23 riders participating.  We appreciate everyone who supported this effort. We do plan to make it an annual event and next year we promise it will be bigger and better,” Langford said.

The KAOSS concert, co-sponsored by the teams from Cummings Signs and Greenville Motor Co., also had to call it quits earlier than planned on Saturday.  The event, which included a road block at the entrance to Butler

Square shopping center, netted nearly $1,000.

 A bake sale/yard sale held by a Georgiana team raised $600 in just three hours.

Today, April 21, a Krispy Kreme Doughnut Sale, sponsored by Hopewell Baptist Church, will be held in front of Fred's Discount Store in Greenville from 9:30  a.m. until, with a $5 donation requested per box of doughnuts.

All teams were reminded by Teams Chair Ann Steiner Gregory to make sure they tallied all monies prior to attending Bank Night, scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday night, May 10 at the YMCA. All monies should be turned in that night, all door prizes delivered, and T-shirts can be picked up.

Several teams will also hold fundraising activities, including concessions, during the Relay itself. McKinley Tire will once again donate a full set of tires to be raffled off for just $2 a ticket, Reynolds said.

As always, Relay will offer many entertaining and tasty events, among them a dance contest, cook-off, limbo, volleyball, and the new &#8220tacky tourist” relay and &#8220Relay Idol” contest, which replaces the long-running womanless beauty pageant.

For those concerned about keeping up with the &#8220small fries” during the hoopla of Relay, &#8220we will also have Relay Theatre with Disney films for the children here inside the YMCA that night,” said Activities Chair Greta Whiddon.

&#8220Cheerleaders from Greenville High will be monitoring the kids. Parents or guardians will sign in the child and only they can sign the child back out.”

The 2007 Butler County ACS Relay For Life is sponsored by Wal-Mart.
